Come and be a part of the exciting experience at Hilton Head Pottery! You'll have the fantastic opportunity to watch Sarah Wells Rolland showcase her wheel-throwing techniques and share her unique ways of altering pots. She will also discuss the inspiring recovery efforts at The Village Potters Clay Center in Asheville, NC, which is working to overcome the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. To cap off this fantastic weekend, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a day of hands-on Raku firing alongside the talented alternative firing artists Mark and Joey Taylor.

Friday Night

We’ll begin the weekend with a traditional low-country boil cookout followed by Sarah’s presentation and slide show featuring the Village Potters Clay Center in Ashville, NC.

Saturday

Join Sarah Wells Rolland as she shares her exciting wheel-throwing processes and creative techniques for transforming her amazing pottery vessels!

Sunday

If you can't attend the entire weekend, individual events can be purchased separately:

  • Friday Evening: $75 (dinner & Sarah’s slide presentation)

  • Saturday: $200 (Sarah's throwing & techniques demo)

  • Sunday: $100 (raku firing workshop)

Get ready for a day of alternative firing. Mark and Joey will pull out the Raku kilns, and everyone will try their hand at creating the magical surfaces of raku firing.

Friday, March 21st

Low-country boil cookout and Sarah Wells Rolland slideshow

Join us this weekend, starting Friday at 5 pm, for an exciting gathering! We invite you to partake in a fun happy hour followed by a traditional low-country boil cookout—an excellent opportunity to connect and share our experiences with one another. After dinner, Sarah will inspire us with a slide presentation on The Village Potters Clay Center, shedding light on the resilience they showed in dealing with the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. She will also share their visionary plans to nurture new opportunities for the dedicated artists of Asheville, NC. We’ll conclude the evening filled with inspiration and community spirit by 8 to 8:30 pm.

Saturday, March 22nd

Sarah Wells Rolland demo and technique discussions

We will gather at the studio on Saturday morning for a continental breakfast. Sarah will share her techniques for honing your throwing skills and transforming a vessel into an original piece reflecting your aesthetics. She will throw bigger pots in sections, make a darted pitcher, throw a basket with an overhead handle, create an oval dish with built-in handles, create mugs with multiple approaches to handles, and more. Sarah shares openly and delights in lively discussion. She will explain how she makes her aesthetic decisions to create lines and movement in her forms. Sarah is well known for pushing clay to its limits.

Sunday, March 23rd

Participation in our hands-on Raku firing workshop

Sunday offers an exciting opportunity to explore alternative firing techniques! Join Mark and Joey Taylor as they share their valuable insights on preparing, decorating, and firing pottery in our gas-fired Raku kilns. With these fun alternative firing techniques, you can really "play with fire and smoke," allowing you to create stunning Naked Raku, Saggar, or Horsehair pottery.

We will provide a selection of bisque-fired pots for you to work with. Your participation fee includes two bisque-fired pot ready to apply the alternative firing technique of your choice; additional pots will be available for purchase during the raku firing (if time allows), starting at $30 each. Experience the thrill of alternative firing techniques and discover how to "make the magic" happen!
